thank you for helping to “wrap” someone in need with the comfort of a handmade quilt!

What began as an effort to collect “a few quilts” to send to a Ukrainian friend who became a refugee in March 2022, has grown to a worldwide effort to help families in distress all over the world! Our quilt counter shows just HOW much care and love has been sent to refugees in the countries of Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, and Romania… to earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria, and most recently, to fire victims in Lahaina, Maui.

Quilters are givers! Our registration and tracking system has added technology to the craft of quilting: quiltmakers and recipients have connected in sweet ways as the quilts are scanned as they are delivered. One human connecting with another… providing comfort and love and the message “I see you, and I care about you”.

How It Works

1

Quilts and blankets

We need all sizes of new quilts and blankets.  They can be traditionally quilted, tied, fleece, flannel, knitted or crocheted.

We send quilts out to those in need weekly, with our charity partner Lifting Hands International. We have also personally distributed thousands of quilts overseas. Thank you for helping!

2

Label them

Register each quilt here, then print the info page (one per quilt), fold so that the QR code is visible, and place in a small ziplock bag and safety-pin it to your quilt.

Optional: add your own personal fabric label  to the back of the quilt.

Sewing Centers

Our first sewing center was created in the fall of 2022 near Kraków, Poland. The intent was to offer a place where refugee women could learn some skills, and have a place to sew and make items to sell.

Through the generosity of individual donors, we were able to purchase 15 sewing machines. Fabric companies and other quilting industry friends donated literally tons of fabric and all supplies needed to sew. A group of 35 humanitarian-minded worker-bees traveled from all over the U.S. to set it up, teach classes, and distribute quilts to refugees.

What we didn’t anticipate was the impact of time spent with other women, learning and creating. The differences in languages was not a barrier. A few comments:  “It was the first time in several months that I have not thought about the war”,  “We are happy to have a haven to escape the trauma of the war”, and “Thank you very much to your sewing team! Teenagers and women so forget about problems and troubles!”.

We quickly realized the power of sewing therapy and healing that comes when new friends, laughter, and creativity all come together. Sewing is great for the mental health of these displaced and traumatized women. They are eager to learn and to spend time at the sewing centers.

Through donor gifts (both large and small!) there are now several sewing centers in Poland and Ukraine. Our donated machines (now 40!) are being used to make camo gear for soldiers, quilts and blankets for kids, and are used as a tool to help rehab injured soldiers and to help displaced Ukrainians deal with stress and PTSD.

Can you help support our sewing centers?

WHO WE Are

We care about… the power of creativity… the goodness and generosity of quilters… the importance of being seen, understood and valued… the power of invitation… caring for one… gratitude.

Wrap the World with Quilts was founded by Gina and Hal Halladay and Beth Hawkins and our unity around these important values was the foundation for the quick action we took to do something – however small – to help Ukrainian refugees when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

With the intent to send a few quilts to some personal friends who were fleeing Ukraine, we launched “Wrap Ukraine With Quilts.” We have been involved in the quilt industry for three decades and we know that QUILTERS ARE GIVERS! Through social media, we got the word out to fellow quilters. Immediately quilts started showing up at Gina and Hal’s house and we have received quilts every single day since.

A month after our launch, Hal delivered 250 quilts to refugees in Krakow, Poland. As beautiful handmade quilts continued to arrive, we knew something big was happening. We had “accidentally” started a charity! We outgrew Gina’s living room and would require some office space and financial donors. The vision expanded to “Wrap the World With Quilts”, which received 501(c)(3) status from the IRS in the summer of 2022. In the first year, we traveled to Poland several times, and organized two humanitarian group trips to Krakow to support refugees.

Gina Halladay and Beth Hawkins met in 2007 as brand new designers setting up booths near one another at a quilt industry trade show. Beth went on to design fabric collections and quilt patterns, write books, and teach. Gina had a long-arm quilting business and dealership, wrote for quilting magazines, designed quilt patterns, and opened a retail quilt shop. The connection that they made at that first Quilt Market has held strong. They have worked together, played together, vacationed together, spent holidays with family together, quilted together, lived through a hurricane together, and even quarantined for two weeks together during a pandemic.

Hal Halladay, the husband of Gina, knows more about quilting than most men because quilting is so important to Gina and she has operated several quilting businesses. Hal is a leadership consultant and he cycled through western Ukraine and Poland in August 2021, where he met Nataliya, who lived in Lviv, Ukraine and worked at a large IT company in leadership development. Hal and Nataliya developed a business relationship and when Nataliya fled Ukraine as a refugee in March 2022, she sent a picture of her kids at the border. It was this photo that initially inspired Gina, Hal and Beth to mobilize an effort to send quilts to refugees.

While we have business experience in quilting and beyond, it was simply our commitment to help Nataliya and her family and friends that launched Wrap the World with Quilts. We knew so little about humanitarian aid but we cared about those who were displaced and suffering. And we knew quilters were givers. That was enough to get started and continues to sustain and guide us and attract great people to our cause.

Thank you for your support!
